Our Story

Funda Trust

The Funda Trust story began from the recognition of a need. Unathi Ndlwana, the Chairperson, a seasoned and experienced teacher recognised the need to assist and give back to her native country (South Africa) with the passion and knowledge of two decades of teaching in London (UK) where she involved in a federation which turnaround schools from failing to outstanding schools. She felt this turnaround model, if adopted to suit the environment, can help poor performing schools in South Africa, especially those from underserved communities. South Africa is an unequal society and education plays an important role perpetuating or solving the problem. Unathi felt that there is a need to help improve the quality of education.

As fate would have it, Unathi had a 12 hour meeting with the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) delegation in Oxford, UK. The meeting gnited the flame that has powered the incorporation and development of the trust. In the meeting SADTU understood the power of the school turnaround model and how it can have an impact on the quality of teaching and performance levels of pupils. The snowball effect of that meeting in September 2017 has resulted in a mandate from the National Department of Basic Education of South Africa and the Provincial Department of Education of the Eastern Cape, to implement a pilot 12 month project to test efficiency of the turnaround model on 9 struggling schools in the Eastern Cape. The Fundisa Teacher Training and Development Programme was established.

The Funda Trust believes

The Funda Trust believes that every child deserves a quality education regardless of their background. It’s core mission is uplift the standards of education by working with key school and community stakeholders in South Africa.

Vision

All children deserve

All children deserve a high-quality education no matter what background they come.

Mission

We work

We work with schools and communities to centre the schools as hubs for sustainable
learning and community cohesion. In communities where schools have lost their historic role as the centres of society, you will find that those schools are not in the best of shape. It is crucial that schools are positioned as hubs that nurture community cohesion and sustainable learning. This is our core mission to work with schools and communities to find and create their own collaborative culture to improve education standards and community value.
